Chairman's Message

Dear Student,

It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to the Department of Materials Science of the University of Patras. The Department of Materials Science is a Department of Excellence of the University of Patras, “among the top Departments of the University”, as stated in the conclusions of the External Evaluation, conducted in September 2013 by the Hellenic Quality Assurance and Accreditation Agency (HQA).

Materials Science is an interdisciplinary area in which all areas of the basic sciences meet. Primarily these are Physics and Chemistry, but also specific, and constantly expanding, areas of Biology and Geology. Mathematics also plays a crucial role, as it is the tool for quantitative expression of the physical and chemical laws that govern the behavior of matter and the properties of materials.

The main goal of the Department of Materials Science in education is the organization and execution of a modern Undergraduate and Postgraduate Curriculum, with high quality standards. The Undergraduate Curriculum covers both the traditional areas of Materials and the most modern areas, including, among others, topics of Biomaterials, Microstructured and Nanostructured Materials, Photonic and Optoelectronic Materials, Molecular and Biomolecular Materials, Magnetic Materials, etc., as well as their applications in Industry, Energy, Environment, Biotechnology, Nanotechnology, and other fields. The ultimate goal of the Undergraduate Curriculum is to offer the Department's graduates the guarantees for significant and growing employment opportunities in industry, public organizations, and in educational and research institutions. The Undergraduate Curriculum of the Department was certified, with the highest distinction of "Fully compliant", by HQA (now Hellenic Authority for Higher Education - HAHE) in May 2019, while within 2025 the process of its 2nd certification by HAHE has also begun. A similar certification was also awarded to the Postgraduate Program in “Materials Science” of the Department in the summer of 2025.

On behalf of all members of the Department, I wish you all a good continuation in your studies and an excellent academic year!!

Patras, September 2025
